Janelle is a registered Psychologist with 20 years experience. Janelle has experience working with all age groups in a variety of settings.
Janelle's framework is underpinned by Positive Psychology. According to Martin Seligman (2011), the founder of Positive Psychology, "the goal of positive psychology is to measure and build human flourishing". Flourishing relates to positive emotions, engagement (interest), meaning (purpose), self-esteem, optimism, resilience, and positive relationships.
Janelle uses a range of treatment approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Cognitive Behavioural therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, and Solution-focused therapy. Janelle is also trained in Sandplay therapy.
Janelle has undergone training in, and is able to deliver, the parenting education programs 123 Magic and Emotion Coaching, Circle of Security (COS), and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.
Janelle has completed post graduate studies in the area of Developmental/Complex Trauma. The term Complex Trauma is used to describe "the experience of multiple, chronic and prolonged, developmentally adverse traumatic events, most often of an interpersonal nature (e.g. sexual or physical abuse, war, community violence) and early life onset. These exposures often occur within the child's caregiving system and include physical, emotional, and educational neglect and child maltreatment beginning in early childhood" (van der Kolk, 2005). The term Developmental trauma is often adopted to "describe the pervasive developmental effects of "complex trauma" in childhood (Stolbach, 2007).
Janelle brings the experience of a varied work history. She started her career as a Management/Training Consultant with a small private sector firm in Sydney but soon found her way into the welfare/community sector where she worked for eighteen years before going into private practice. Janelle has held such varied positions as pregnancy counsellor, life-skills trainer for unemployed teenagers, residential youth worker, family counsellor (working with families engaged in the child protection system), as the Co-ordinator of a women's refuge (for women and children escaping domestic violence) and the Manager of a parenting program. Janelle has also held the role of Psychologist for the organisation now known as SIDS and KIDS and as the Co-ordinator of a Brisbane based Big Brothers-Big Sisters program (a mentoring program for at risk young people). Janelle has also held practice advisor, research, training, and management roles.
